Quote of the day: unknown

"An amateur practices until she gets it right, a professional practices until she can't get it wrong."

I use this quote all the time with my students, who tend to want to move on to a new piece once they hit that amateur mark of being able to get it right. Often this is appropriate, but recital pieces should be more polished. I explain that the amount of practice it takes to get from starting to learn the piece to that amateur mark is about equal to the amount of practice needed to get from the amateur to the professional level.

A word of caution: don't use this quote with a student who is a perfectionist, or very hard on herself when she makes a mistake! All things in moderation…
